Paul wants news from the churches

The Apostle Paul is detained, but he wants to hear how the churches he planted are doing. He asks his co‑workers Luke, Titus and Silas to visit them across Macedonia & Achaia (present‑day Greece), Asia Minor and Galatia (present‑day Turkey), and the islands of the Mediterranean.

Most — but not all — of the cities on the map are linked in the New Testament to Paul’s church‑planting journeys. The others were real cities of his day that might or might not have had churches planted in Paul’s lifetime. For the game we assume they did, though we don’t really know.

Your job

Visit as many churches as you can. You direct three evangelists, each starting in a different place and each marked in his own colour:

  • Luke starts in Philippi
  • Silas starts in Antioch
  • Titus starts on Crete
Roads, footpaths and sea routes link the cities.

Three ways to travel, four regions to reach

Travel

Evangelists move by one of three methods — the die decides which each turn.

  • Roman Road
  • Footpath
  • Boat

The 8‑sided die shows Road, Footpath or Boat — or a question mark, Player’s Choice, which lets the roller pick the mode.

  • Road face
  • Footpath face
  • Boat face
  • Player’s Choice face

Regions

City dots are coloured by region, and each region an evangelist visits scores.

  • Macedonia & Achaia
  • Asia Minor
  • Galatia
  • The Mediterranean Islands

How to play

Roll the die, move your evangelists, and mark every step on your own map. Every roll is a chance for everyone to act.

  1. Roll

Players take turns rolling the die to set the mode of travel for the turn. On a Player’s Choice, the roller names the mode.

  2. Move or preach

The roller acts with one to three evangelists. Every other player may act with one. Move along a route, or preach where you stand.

  3. Get called

Preach in a city twice (after visiting two regions) and the evangelist is called as a pastor — worth the most points, and his travelling ends.

Components & setup

Each player takes a Map/Scoring sheet and three highlighters: green for Luke, orange for Silas and blue for Titus. The highlighters record each evangelist’s actions on the map.

Cities are divided into four regions for scoring, shown by the colour of each city’s dot. Luke begins in Philippi, Silas in Antioch and Titus on Crete.

A turn, in detail

The player who rolled takes one of two actions with one to three of the evangelists. All other players may choose one evangelist and take one of the same two actions:

  • Move. If the evangelist can move by the rolled mode, draw a line along that route to the next city. An evangelist can’t reuse a route between two cities (in either direction), though other evangelists can.
  • Preach. If an evangelist can’t move, announce that he is preaching in that city. The first time, circle the city dot in his colour. The second time (or more), if he has visited at least two regions, circle it again and announce he has been called as a pastor. He can no longer travel.

If none of the evangelists can do either, that player passes for the turn.

For example, on a Road roll the first player could move Luke from Philippi to Neapolis, move Silas from Antioch to Iconium, and have Titus preach on Crete.

Ending the game

The game ends when one player has all three evangelists called as pastors, or when no player can move any of their evangelists. Everyone then totals their score on the Scoring panel of their sheet.

Scoring
  • +4 for each region visited by each evangelist.
  • +3 for each time any evangelist preached (counting once for the city where an evangelist is called as pastor).
  • +5 for each evangelist called as a pastor.
  • −2 for each city not visited by any evangelist.

The highest score wins.

The start: your map and scoring sheet.
The end: 3 regions each for Luke and Silas, 4 for Titus, 11 preaches, 3 called, 2 cities missed: 84 points.

  • Solo

Play against computer opponents who each plan their own journey by the same rules, at three skill levels.

  • Pass & play

Two or more people share one device, each with their own map.

  • Same room, own phones

Like the table game: the roller announces the roll, and everyone moves on their own phone.
